About SOPA
Message from the Chairman

It is with great pleasure that I announce SOPA’s 30th anniversary in 2012. In my second year as the Chairman for SOPA, it is with even greater excitement that we move into the new year with renewed plans for SOPA.
In recent years, the emergence of the digital and online media has brought about significant changes to the publishing industry. On the one hand, these technological developments have made information more readily available and quicker regardless of geographic location, time zone and language, but while these tie in with the ultimate aim of the publishing industry, it also falls to the industry to provide accurate information and to ensure that what is being reported is true, reliable and relevant.
Although the world is changing, our commitment to the industry hasn’t. Over the past 30 years, SOPA’s local and regional reach continue to grow with an array of activities that we are preparing to unveil soon. Part of the exciting programme will involve re-introducing SOPA and our goals, and putting into action, plans that will focus on helping us promote best practices in the industry. And of course, there is the prestigious SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence – Asia’s highest accolade in recognition of journalistic excellence. This year, we are delighted that the Hong Kong University’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre will be the Administrator of the Awards for the 2nd year running.
Gearing up for the future, and with the collaborative efforts of our Board members, Awards Committee and our members, SOPA will continue to facilitate a favorable environment for professional publishing industry around Asia.
Last but not the least, I wish to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all who have supported SOPA over the years. I wish you all the best success in 2012 and a Prosperous Year of the Dragon!

David E. Smith
Chairman – SOPA
